NJ Hospital Price Compare

About This Site

This Web resource allows healthcare consumers to compare hospitals based on average charges. It uses standardized categories that make it easier for users to compare hospitals in New Jersey and beyond. This information does not constitute, nor should it substitute for, medical advice. Disclaimer.

This database allows users to compare hospitals in a number of ways:

  • By county
  • By the number of beds
  • By shared attributes, such as resident training programs.

This updated site reflects 2012 year-end data. It categorizes information based on Major Diagnostic Categories, or MDCs, or the more defined Diagnostic Related Groups, or DRGs, as used by the Medicare system. This data reflects charge information for a routine medical case; additional charges associated with major complications or co-occurring conditions have not been included. This makes it easier for consumers to compare baseline information from one facility to another. Actual charges may vary on a case-by-case basis, based on factors such as the patient’s overall health, including the presence of underlying conditions such as diabetes; and any complicating medical factors.

This information is compiled from publicly available sources provided by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. Current data is based on hospital discharges from January 1, 2012 - December 31, 2012.  Over time the system will build up to use the most recent four quarters of publicly available hospital inpatient claims data.

This data is a set of averages; individual pricing may vary based on a variety of factors, such as severity of illness, complications, selected medical devices, etc. The prices contained in this Web site are based on hospitals' published charges. In most instances, Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurers pay hospitals a set fee that is less than the hospital's published price.

An individual hospital may not appear in every search if the facility does not offer a particular service covered under the DRG list.

Patients seeking to determine the impact a hospital stay will have on their deductible or insurance co-pay should contact their insurance carrier directly to determine the payment negotiated between the insurer and the hospital. Other questions can be raised directly with the patient's primary care physician or hospital.

This data is being presented as a resource for the consumer; any use of this information, conclusions drawn from this information or decisions made with this information are solely the responsibility of the user.
