Some important information for users to remember:
- This site reflects hospital "charges," an amount used as a starting point for negotiations. Major healthcare payers such as Medicare, Medicaid and HMOs pay hospitals significantly discounted rates; they do not pay the charges rate.
- Those discounts paid by major healthcare users are often "cost-shifted" to other sources, resulting in the higher "charges" rates seen here.
- In close to 90 percent of cases, hospitals are paid much less than the amounts listed here.
- Unfortunately, a small percentage of uninsured, self-pay patients are billed at the "charges" rate. Virtually all N.J. hospitals have adopted compassionate billing practices to negotiate lower rates and work out payment plans with self-pay patients.
- Patients are encouraged to contact individual hospitals and their insurance plans to discuss specific billing rates and practices.
